How To Overcome Any Crisis By Mastering Your Mindset
I don’t need to tell you that we’re experiencing very challenging times right now. Recently I heard a statistic that here in Australia more than 150,000 businesses will go bankrupt in the next 90 days.
This will result in more than 500,000 jobs being lost.
It doesn't have to be that way. But it will be for many business owners.
Why? Because they haven’t got the ability to pivot their current business model. They’re too stuck in a state of fear, scarcity… they’re falling into mindset traps that ultimately paralyse themselves.
Recently, a mate of mine did a study of 23 CEOs. He interviewed them, transcribed them word for word, and ran it through data analysis software.
The results? The CEOs fell into three specific categories of thinking.
Mindset 1: Fear
The first category of thinking that emerged within these CEOs mindsets was fear.
In this group, most people were negative. They were watching way too much media and PR, occupying their time in the blame game, and trying to work out whose fault this whole current economic downturn and crisis is.
Mindset 2: Unfocused
The second group of people showed unfocused thinking. They kind of had their head in the sand, believing that it wasn't happening, that it was just going to be over overnight.
Mindset 3: Strategy
The third group of people were the strategy focused group. They leaned way more into healthy networks, were focused on solutions, and were overall more positive and felt more secure than others.
What can we learn from this?
As human beings, we spend way too much of our time stuck in our heads. Yet we are not our thoughts. We control our thoughts… although some do this better than others!
And where our focus goes, our energy flows and our results show.
So if we're consuming way too much media, if we're seeing a lot of this stuff online, what's really happening is this: we're creating new filtering systems of how we see the world.
A perfect example of this is when you say that you'd like to buy a new car. Let’s just say you'd like to buy a new white pickup truck. All of a sudden, you start seeing those trucks everywhere.
Is it a coincidence or were they always there?
They were always there, right? Yet, what happens is, when we make a decision and start to focus on something, we program what's called the reticular activating system to start to experience more of that.
This works with any thought that we focus on a lot - we’ll start to see more of it in our daily life.
So if we’re focusing on fear, we’ll see evidence that justifies this belief everywhere.
On the flip side, if we focus on strategy, then that’s what our brains will focus on too.
The choices you need to make right now
The first thing I want you to think about is this: what do you need to do to protect your health?
I honestly believe my number one value is health. I always used to put others first, but what I realized after many years of burnout and different situations is that until I put myself first, I was unable to really put others first and help them out as well.
If my cup is not first filled up, how could I possibly fulfil other people's cups?
Also, what do you need to do to protect your mental health given the likely challenges that we face right now?
And let me tell you that this won't be the last challenge you face in your life. Challenges and change are one thing that is consistent and always there.
If you've ever checked out my podcast, The Comeback Game, the whole premise of our podcast is interviewing successful business owners and entrepreneurs and understanding what their biggest challenges and adversities have been.
This crisis we’re going through right now will define you.
Are you going to be someone that has your head stuck in the sand?
Are you going to be someone that consumes way too much media, reading false information and conjecture?
Or are you going to be someone that's more strategy focused, that works your inner game, that builds a solid mindset, and that comes out the other side of this as a leader?
How to master your mindset during COVID-19
There’s a few things you can do to see your business go from surviving to thriving right now, but it's going to require consistent and decisive action.
I honestly believe there's two things that are going to see us through the other side. The first one is for us to build a solid inner game. And when I say inner game, I mean your mindset.
Work on developing a mindset that allows you to experience the current situation from a place of peace and calm, gratitude and acceptance of all that is, seeing all the perceived positives and all the perceived negatives.
From that place of seeing everything, we're able to make the decisive decisions that will see us through.
