Growing up, I had 20 great business ideas a day.
Every week I was onto something new, making plans and dreaming up my incredible success with New Venture 1, New Venture 2, and so on.
Now I know what was really going on… I was attracted to ‘shiny things’.
Jumping from idea to idea, without ever fully implementing any of them, was a really bad habit.
For a long time, this habit stopped me from being productive or achieving the success I wanted.
As entrepreneurs, there are a lot of habits we need to master to build a successful business. Likewise, there are a lot of habits we need to let go of to truly fly.
Let’s face it - entrepreneurs wear a lot of hats, both inside and outside their business. We’re not just business owners, we’re mums or dads, partners, sisters or brothers, caregivers, friends… it’s a lot to balance.
Developing the right habits helps you wear all hats far more effectively.
Here’s a few tips to get you started.
Start your day right
Simply put: Own your day before it owns you.
I used to check my phone first thing in the morning. I’d literally roll over and start scrolling through my notifications in bed.
Soon I noticed that I started the day in a semi-manic state. And that’s how my entire day would play out.
These days I choose how I set myself up for the day. Both physically and emotionally.
My phone’s notifications are turned off. I don’t even look at it until I have -
- Had a nutritious breakfast
- Gone for a walk
- Spent 5 minutes planning what I wanted to achieve that day
As a result, I feel calm, energised, and focused on enjoying a productive day.
Understand your ‘why'
Building habits is not as simple as saying ‘I’m going to do this new routine from now on’.
It’s just not enough - we need to unpack our old habits and build our new ones emotionally.
Part of that is connecting our new habit with our ‘why’.
What is the reason we want to install this new habit, from an emotional perspective?
What do we want to feel? Why do we want to change?
To build new habits that stick, we must understand why it’s important for us to make this change in our behaviour. When we’re connected emotionally with the change we want to see, it’s far easier to make the effort to update our behaviour.
Anchor your new habit
A really helpful ‘trick’ for building a new habit is to attach it to a habit you already have.
For example, just say I wanted to read a book a week.
I could anchor that new goal to something I already do - walking every day.
By downloading an audiobook, I could listen while I walk, taking care of two positive habits at once.
Think about habits you already have. How could you anchor a new habit into your existing ones? It’s far easier than creating a habit from scratch.
Commit to consistency
Starting a new habit is easy. Especially around the New Year. We make resolutions to get fitter, spend more time with family, learn a language… all sorts of things.
But come January 30 and we find we’re back in our old routines.
Why? Because it’s easier. Change takes effort.
Consistency is not easy.
But it’s essential for building a new habit.
In fact, the time when we find ourselves thinking ‘I’m too tired’, or whatever reason we give for breaking the new habit… that’s the best time to actually reinforce the new habit.
Because that moment is a choice. It takes time to really internalise new habits, so the more you choose the new habit over your old one, the faster your new habit will become second nature to you.
