“I’ll be happy when I reach 50 grand a month.”
That’s what I used to think when I was just starting out in business.
One day many years later, I reached that milestone.
You know what?
Nothing changed. No bells ringing. No angels singing.
No magical ‘switch’ turned on and suddenly my life was everlasting Nirvana.
So many business owners get caught up in reaching a destination.
They think, “I’ll be happy when…”
But the reality is that they never are happy when they do that arbitrary thing.
Because their happiness doesn’t actually come from the attainment of something. It comes through the journey of attainment of something.
Nature’s growing all the time. If it’s not growing roots under the surface, it’s growing foliage above the surface. When it stops growing, it withers and rots.
It’s the same for us human beings.
The moment we stop growing is when depression kicks in. It’s when stagnation kicks in. It’s when boredom kicks in.
It’s not even the goal that we want to achieve. We want the feeling of what we perceive the goal is going to give us.
Even more than that, we want the accomplishment of achieving the goal.
But too often we focus so hard on getting to that goal, we don’t celebrate throughout the journey there.
When was the last time you assessed what you’ve achieved up until right now… and celebrated?
Everything you’ve done to get where you are right now is a series of problems solved, skills learned, and strategies executed.
So rather than looking at the top of the mountain and being sad you’re not there yet…
How would it feel instead to look at the wonderful things happening around you right now on your way up there?
I know it can be hard.
As entrepreneurs we have big dreams. We are impatient.
But we are making progress… every single day.
Instead of comparing yourself with others or where you think you should be on your journey, finish each day with these questions:
How have I moved forward today?
How have I moved forward this week?
How have I moved forward this month?
Where have I spun my wheels?
And what needs to change to get the traction I need?
I’d love to know your thoughts on this. Hit reply and let me know.
