If you’ve got employees, I’m sure you’ve at times found it hard to motivate them.
Sometimes it’s easy to fall into a bit of a slump, especially when things are really busy.
Or you’re going through a period of growth and comfort zones are being stretched.
At times like this, it’s easy to become focused on the ‘work’ side of work… and things can seem kind of crappy.
I had a time like this a few years ago at The Game Changers. We’d had some internal changes and external challenges, and everyone was feeling a bit deflated from it all.
I remember one meeting in particular where my team just weren’t connecting. I had to work really hard to get them to contribute and commit energetically to the meeting.
This was so unlike them. My team are amazing and take pride in their contribution to the business. I knew I needed to help them see things from a better perspective.
So I stopped for a minute and reframed my thinking.
The answer was simple.
“Hey everyone,” I said, “let’s just take a second right now to list something good that happened last week.”
At first it was hard for them to think of anything.
But with a little coaxing, soon a couple of people spoke up with some personal wins.
Then the team started recollecting client wins.
And they just kept on coming.
Once everyone had refocused their energy on looking for the good, instead of dwelling on the bad… all of a sudden we realised we were surrounded by an abundance of great stuff.
What’s more, everyone’s energy picked up.
Like a blossoming flower, their faces brightened, their body language straightened and opened, and they started laughing and contributing without my prompting.
Since that day, we always begin every meeting by sharing a few wins from the week.
Our wins can be anything - a personal realisation, a business goal, a client win, or a recognition of another team member or client who is raising the bar in some way.
By doing this, we are connecting with each other, the business and our clients.
Equally importantly, we are actively focusing our mind on the things we want to create more of.
Where focus goes, energy flows…
We’ve even rolled out the concept to our Opulence members. In our private Member’s group, we share our wins regularly and celebrate together.
We find that the more we share, the more we have to share.
And the more we share, the more opportunity we have to connect, be championed, and reconnect with the FUN in business. Because business should be fun!
Look, there are always things in life that are challenging.
Things that will create misery if you choose to focus on them.
The difference between being miserable and being positive is simply the choice you make for yourself.
So let me leave you with a task for this week.
Find a way to implement a ‘share your wins’ attitude within your business.
Whether it be a ‘wins board’ where you share customer feedback, a space for sharing before meetings commence, or gathering together for 10 minutes at the beginning of each day to share what’s great in business...
Give your team space to recollect, to recognise each other, and to connect with your business’ mission.
You’ll soon see a big change in their level of engagement.
