Most entrepreneurs are control freaks.
I say this with love. I’m a recovering control freak myself 🙂
We are passionate about producing a really good product.
We put everything into it.
And at the beginning, soon word gets around.
We find ourselves with loads of work on.
Then too much work… ‘omg I need to hire some staff!’
This early success comes because we’re perfectionists. Because we agonise about every little detail of our service, so our clients trust we’ll provide the best.
But a few years in, those same perfectionist traits will kill the business.
It’ll probably take some years off your life in terms of stress and unhealthy hours too…
And it’s why your business cannot scale. Because you simply don’t trust anyone else to be as good as you.
Your business needs you, and only you can do it right.
There are dozens of things within your business that others can do just as well as you can. For many tasks, others can actually do it better (hello bookkeeping).
Even for the things that are in your Zone of Genius, things you believe your business can rely on only you for… there *are* people out there who can do it too.
But you need to let go of your vice-like grip on every little detail.
For me, my perfectionist Achilles’ heel was sales.
For a long time, I couldn’t let go of my belief that nobody could sell within my business like I could.
So I built my whole business around the need for me to do all the sales calls.
As you can imagine, it limited my business growth.
Nearly burned me out, too.
But when I systemised my sales call process, so it was teachable to someone else... that opened a whole new world for me.
Now I could hire a sales team. I could train them on my system, and mentor them until they were as good as me (or better).
The same thing happened with hiring new coaches to provide support for our Opulence members.
Could anyone else coach like I could?
No, but there’s talent out there that’s just as exceptional, just in a different way.
And these days I proudly have a group of coaches in The Game Changers’ family who are absolutely outstanding and give the same amount of enormous value that I do.
The best part?
Every other A-player I have in the team brings a different flavour. A different perspective. Different experiences and ideas.
The differences in my team bring new levels of richness to our Opulence members.
And that makes the business stronger.
Instead of having one business coach to gain knowledge from (me), they have a group of coaches who all have different styles and experience to learn from.
If I had kept hanging on, clinging to the belief that only I could do the things I was good at… it scares me to think how much my business would actually be limited by my own perfectionism.
In hindsight, this stuff is easy to see.
I’ve spent years learning these lessons, both from my own experience, and from having my own group of mentors to learn from.
And I know how hard it can be to let go of control. To trust that other talented people can step into your shoes (and fill them).
I get it.
But once you learn how to attract, train and retain A-player staff, your entire business will change.
So will your life.
