Life’s a bit like a bank account.
If you’re constantly withdrawing, and not replenishing funds... someday you’re going to go into deficit.
That’s why I try to put myself in positions where I’m giving more than I’m taking… after all,
it’s better to have cash in the bank in case you ever need to withdraw it.
Also, when you’re a generous person, something called the law of reciprocity comes into
play.
Basically, we humans are much more comfortable taking than receiving.
Receiving compliments, receiving gifts, receiving favours... that stuff makes most of us kind
of uncomfortable psychologically.
At some point, each person will hit their limit of things they can receive... and they’ll start to feel they need to give something back.
At some point, we all feel obligated to reciprocate. To repay what we owe.
Giving back could be in a two-dimensional way eg: ‘I received something from Dan, so I’ll
give something back to Dan’.
But it could also manifest as giving back to someone else.
So the reasons for giving generously are both practical and psychological.
There’s also an energetic reason in play.
The more you give away, the more you empty your cup and are open to receiving back.
Now, when I’m talking about giving, I’m not necessarily talking about material things.
I’m talking about generosity. About support, advice, time, resources, anything that’s lending
a hand or helping someone in their situation.
One of the most active members of our Opulence group has seen incredible business and
personal growth in the short time he’s with us. We were talking about it the other day.
I told him I wasn’t surprised at all, because he’s been so actively generous to others in the
group. He’s always in there giving support and advice. So it’s only natural that good things
will come back to him.
When you’re stuck in ‘survival mentality’, there’s a desire to clutch everything close.
In a mindset that sees lack everywhere, it can be hard to give your time or energy away.
But whether your business is doing $5k right now, or $500k… generosity gives back at any
level.
I get that it can be hard to wake up with an abundant mindset - it’s not something you can
just switch on.
But the more you consciously go out and create that, the more it becomes a habit.
Let me leave you today with this analogy.
If you throw a stone into a lake, the ripples don’t start from the outside, they start from the middle and spread out.
When we start to make generosity deposits, and start to work on our inner game, the
ripples occur there first.
Start there.
