Unless you’ve been living in a magical teepee for the past 10 years, you’ve heard of the importance of having a ‘business vision’.
Maybe you’ve even defined a vision for your business.
Now, some people scoff at the prospect of a ‘vision’.
What a bunch of woo-woo. ‘We sell car parts, Barry. People buy them. We want them to buy more of them. That’s it.’
No unicorn dust or spirit quests necessary.
But a vision isn’t just some fluffy piece of wording that sits on a wall somewhere.
A strong business vision, when truly aligned with YOU, can help you to organise your actions, focus, and values toward a clear goal.
It can help you make faster decisions and clearly see what is real, and what is not.
Here at The Game Changers, we think of your business vision a bit differently.
We believe that it must start with you personally before it can flow into your business.
We begin by asking ‘what is your desired state’?
That is, what do you want to feel in your business?
What emotions and experiences do you want to have?
Your vision is the first step of creation. It’s an opportunity to step back and have a really good look at what you ultimately want.
What does it look like?
What does it feel like?
What does it sound like to you?
At the start, your vision won’t be clear. But it’s important for something to be there.
Think of an artist with a blank canvas.
They don’t stand at the easel and smash out a finished masterpiece in a single afternoon, do they?
Instead, they sketch the bones of their idea first. They play with perspective and balance. They think about where things might go.
They might not even be clear on what they want to draw at first. But they are clear on what they want to express.
The desired state - the vision - is actually an energetic expression of you.
It’s not the painting. It’s not the business. It’s who you are, or aspire to be.
Sometimes, our vision starts off as an avoidance strategy.
It’s centered around moving away from something we don’t like.
For me when I started my first business decades ago, my ‘vision’ was to move away from the experience of having a boss.
For you, it might be moving away from the experience of having no money.
Or it might be moving away from feeling stuck in a job you hate.
But here’s where lots of people get their ‘vision’ a bit mucked up…
Whether you’re wanting to be financially secure, to avoid a crappy job, or whatever other reason… they’re actually just goals.
Goals are just short term acquisitions.
So, we either -
- reach them and feel dissatisfied 10 seconds after the dopamine buzz has worn off, or
- give up on them because they’re not enough to really drive us
Creating a vision that’s aligned with who you really are, and what you really want, is part art, part science.
It takes some work on your inner game to get it right.
But it’s worth it… because who wants to work 10 years toward a vision that ultimately won’t make them happy?
