Have you ever felt that ‘bad’ things keep happening to you?
“Oh, that’s just my luck”
“Bad things happen in threes”
“Story of my life”
While sometimes it’s easier to feel like life is simply against you, there’s no Mr Boogie Man hiding in every shadow, trying to bring you down.
What’s really happening is this -
We tell ourselves stories about why things happen, and what they mean.
Literally everything we believe is made up.
So when we’re constantly playing some form of belief or story in the cinema inside our heads, our brain only filters in information that proves our story is correct.
Here’s an example.
Just imagine for a second you’re looking to find a partner (maybe you are). You go on a bunch of dates.
The guys are jerks. There’s gonna become a point where you start to believe all guys are jerks. (We’re not)
The thing is, once we start believing in something, our brains pick up that we’re focusing on that belief, and it tries to help us by filtering in information we’re focusing on.
Where focus goes, energy flows
So you could actually meet a nice guy, but unconsciously you’d be picking up on every signal you can find to prove right your belief that guys are jerks.
Here’s why this is so dangerous...
If we’re not consistently challenging our beliefs, or the way the world is showing up for us, we’re - without a doubt - buying into bullsh*t that’s not real.
And chances are, the bullsh*t you’re buying into is not serving you.
It’s keeping you in exactly the place you’re in now. Look at kids. They’re constantly questioning. Why dad? Why is that so?
It’s not because they’re trying to be annoying. It’s because asking questions is how they’re learning about how the world is, and why.
Here’s the kicker…
In some way, if you’re feeling miserable or stuck in your business right now, there’s an emotional payoff for you that you’re buying into.
On some level, you’re comfortable with the discomfort you’re experiencing.
You’ve created an invisible box around yourself that keeps you stuck.
So start to question everything.
What else is there?
How can you leverage your resources for better results?
Where are the gaps in your thinking?
What beliefs do you have that are holding you back?
What could you do instead?
