Running a business can be very challenging.
Wearing different hats, you can be the marketing person, the sales person, you’re trying to pay bills, collect cash… while also trying to manage a team so you can eventually grow a business that works without you.
A common question we get asked at The Game Changers is:
Why would I hire a business coach?
This question is especially asked by people who have been in business for 10 years, 20 or even 30 years. It’s a great question to be asking.
The need for a Business Coach
Here’s how I think about it -
If you look at the way we’ve evolved over the last 10, 20, 30 or even 40 years, you’ll notice we’re in an ever-increasing environment where things are moving faster and faster.
With this speed comes great opportunities, and also great challenges.
There’s never been a more opportunistic time to succeed in business than right now. But equally too, in many ways it’s never been harder to succeed than in today’s hyper-connected, hyper-competitive world.
A business coach can help you point out the blind spots in your strategy. Often what we see happens in business - and I know because I’ve been caught up on this myself - is that we get so busy fighting daily fires that we forget to plan for the future.
When our focus is taken up with our daily to-dos, our eye isn’t on the long term ball, and something can easily break.
Structure + Strategy
Have you ever had the experience of being so focused of getting leads in the door, you’re sending out all these quotes - writing them like mad - and all of a sudden you start winning work. Then you’re flat out ordering stock, setting up staff, onboarding the client, and actually doing the work!
The next minute, you’ve run out of leads. Because you’ve been so present in what you’ve been doing that you haven’t taken care of your wider business situation.
A business coach can help to not only point out your blind spots, but they can also help you put a plan or structure in place so your business can grow steadily and more effectively.
Specialisation
Another thing is that let’s say you’re going to install a pool in your house. Would you go and hire a bricklayer? A plumber? A plasterer? Would you hire a cabinet maker, or carpenter? Of course not. You’d hire someone who specialises in pools.
Sure, you could maybe go and hire a bricklayer for some of it… but you’d be much better off hiring someone who specifically installs pools.
Business coaches are the same - they specialise in growing businesses. They have proven success and runs on the board of having gotten results for themselves, and for their clients. They know the strategies and techniques that can help a business grow. Things you may not know about, or may even be aware of, but don’t know how to implement.
When should I reach out for help?
So to answer the question: when is the best time to get a business coach...
The best time is a week ago. The second best time? Right now!
Imagine if you’d been working with a business coach 6 months or 12 months ago.
Imagine the amount of money you could have saved from expensive mistakes made.
The amount of growth you could have experienced by implementing strategies that work.
The amount of time you could’ve saved from trying to figure out everything on your own.
I’m a strong believer in investing money to save time. One of my mentors once told me ‘most people spend time to save money, but smart people spend money to save time’.
What to look for in a Business Coach
The coaching space is not regulated. Basically anyone can hang out their shingle as a business coach and start taking clients… without necessarily having what it takes to actually get their clients results.
So do your due diligence when choosing a business coach. Follow them online. Sign up to their email list. Ask around your network about them.
Look at their website - how many testimonials do they have?
Do they have a track record of getting tangible results for their clients?
